230sl sitting for years....how to get running?
« on: July 18, 2008, 18:58:15 »
ive had my 230sl sitting for about 5 years, it ran great before it was parked(had engine rebuilt), i havent tried to start it yet.

what should i do it to get it back and running like old times?
also, it had about 1/2 tank of gas which has now turned into trash so what could has to be done to clean the fuel system/tank etc,

thanks for the help

Mine had been sitting for 10 years (thanks to the PO).  I would certainly flush out the brake and clutch (if manual transmission), and hopefully you have no rot.  After 5 years it could be that all of the hydrolics need to be replaced - front calipers and the rear brake cylinders, as well as the clutch master and slave.  Maybe they will be ok, and perhaps will only need a rebuild, depending on the condition of the bores. I would also blow out the fuel lines, both input and return, and put in a new fuel filter and fuel tank mesh filter (after draining and puting new fuel in the tank). Hopefully the gas tank is in good condition, aside from the old gas.  Given that the engine was out, I assume that the radiator was drained and that you will put in new antifreeze when filling.....

I am sure there are more knowledgable folks on the board that can provide further guidance.
