Power Steering Help Needed
« on: July 21, 2008, 23:14:05 »
I have a 1967 230 SL (European model). The car is leaking transmission fluid. It is also shaking when I turn it when parking (low low speed or while stopped). Someone mentioned to me that the power steering on an old model might use transmission fluid. And, when checking the transmission fluid, it looks (on the dipstick) full...I don't want to overfill it...does anyone have any advice?

Thanks!

The power steering oil resevoir is in the engine bay, next to the battery. It uses AFT or transmission fluid.
You can use the search button on the top right of the screen to do a search on how to bleed the system, if necessary.

It could have air in the power steering system. It can probably be fixed by just fixed by jacking up the front of the car and with it running turn the steering wheel lock to lock several times. It fixed my problem. You can search here on actually using the bleeder screw to bleed it also. My screw was broken off so I tried the simple method and it worked. You should also change the power steering filter, search that also. The transmission and power steering are in no way connected. But the power steering can use transmission fluid.

The 'shaking' when you turn could also be a loose or slipping belt.
