Paint and Body plate question
« on: August 19, 2008, 18:31:46 »
Hello guys, once again, I'm here abusing your generous help.

I'm in the process of buying an SL. I've been looking at many different ones. I've found that most sellers are not really cooperative or maybe I just ask too many questions...

Still, one seller did send me the numbers from the Paint and Body plate inside the engine and this caused me to have some questions about it.

First of all, the plate only has 3 lines of numbers, so I cannot know what were the original options on the car.

Secondly, the plate is painted black, although the car is light blue... I checked the section of the chapter on Data Cards that speaks about Body and Paint Numbers plate, but still not sure of what this is telling me. Which is the country code? How can I tell if the car has been modified... which is the number that needs to be stamped on the hardtop?

I was unable to attach an image, but the numbers are:
Line 1 - Missing
Line 2 - 396 G  396 G   6
Line 3 - 113043 10  5
Line 4 - 6   00256  01912

Any information you can share with me I'd appreciate.

Thanks,
Andres G

Andres:
Here is what I know:
First line missing = earlier cars did not have this info
396 G = Medium Blue Metallic body
396 G = Medium Blue Metallic Hardtop
6     = Hardtop in place - softop folded in compartment
113   = Body style W113
043   = 250SL
10    = Left hand drive - standard trans
5     = Europe (outside Germany)
6     = Option Code - ?
00256 = production #
01912 = body # (1912 is the # stamped in several locations on the car
