Tool Kit
« on: May 27, 2010, 04:24:49 »
I was asked recently by a member the sizes of the open ender spanners in my tool kit and thought this information might also be of interest to others. Tools appear to have had little or no use, car is a 280SL built 10-1970. What I also found interesting was the number of different manufacturer / supplyers. See details from left to right, all except the plyers, the wheel fitting locator and the soft / hardtop spanners have Mercedes Benz forged into them or the three pointed star

1 - 17 mm wheel nut wrench                Klein
2 - Multi Grips                                    Heyco
3 - Plyers                                          Hapewe
4 - Spark plug tube spanner                  Hazet
5 - Ring /open ender 19 mm -17 mm     Matador
6 - Open ender 8 & 10 mm                  Matador
7 - Open ender 11 & 13 mm                Matador
8 - Open ender 14 & 17 mm                Heyco
9 - Open ender 17 & 19 mm                Dowidat
10 - Scew driver                                 Felo
11 - Wheel bolt locator no markings
12 - Soft & Hard Top Locking Hnandles no markings

Thanks Goeff,

Is that ring/open ender not 17mm both ends?

First time to see one of these in an MB kit.

Nag,

Definately 17 mm open end x 19 mm ring, also part number forged next to a three pointed star symbol 201 581 02 46

I do have one of the 19/17 spanners, with the closed end, but I have not seen one in a 113 toolkit. I will be curious to hear from others about this. If not 113 any ideas what vintage??

I have what appears to be an original tool kit in my 1970 280SL  My contents are similar does not include the 17mm-19mm combination wrench listed by Treedoc.  I also seem to be missing the tool for the wheel studs and the plastic case of fused.  Below is my lost of tools in my tool kit as it compares to Treedoc's list.

1 - 17 mm wheel nut wrench                Klein
2 - Multi Grips                                    Heyco
3 - Plyers                                          Hapewe
4 - Spark plug tube spanner                  Hazet
5 - Ring /open ender 19 mm -17 mm     Matador  not present/missing
6 - Open ender 8 & 10 mm                  Matador
7 - Open ender 11 & 13 mm                Matador Dowidat
8 - Open ender 14 & 17 mm                Heyco  Dowidat
9 - Open ender 17 & 19 mm                Dowidat Matador
10 - Scew driver                                 Felo
11 - Wheel bolt locator no markings not present/missing
12 - Soft & Hard Top Locking Handles no markings

Looks very similar to the one listed in the technical Manual.

Hello,

As far as I know the box end wrench came along after the W113 cars. The special plastic fuse pliers came with some.  Also it seems that Treedoc has a wide variety of wrench (spanner) manufacturers. I think most kits had more of a match on manufacturers ?

Ah, tool kits! One of my favored collector item topics... ;D

Well, 201 581 02 46...
The 201 (190E etc., Baby Benz) was not present for more than another 10 years when the Pagoda run out of production.
Thus, that tool is clearly not original for the W113.

Yes, I have seen before that open mouth spanners are from the different manufacturers in one tool kit but I am not sure whether or not this was always factory or one of the spanners was replaced later .
Among these Hazet & Gedore  being the oldest and most reputable suppliers.
Later during the production run in the sixties (and seventies) the tools came from cheaper sources like Matador or Heyco.

Don't know how this is today.
I've got one "new" W113 ... uhm ... W112 toolkit in 1995 and the open mouth spanners are all from Matador or Heyco (I don't remember now) but not mixed.
