low fuel light

I drove to near empty, and the red light came on. Filled it, but now the light continued to come on intermittently, especially when accelerating. Not always, but about 50 percent of the time it comes on. Any suggestions?

Never "tested" my light
Then again, my fuel gauge is currently my odometer: fuel gauge is not working...

I would pull the sender unit and very carefully clean it (I sprayed brake cleaner) to remove any gunk, with attention to the electric contact at the bottom that triggers the low fuel light. Use a new cork sealing gasket.
