230SL Radio Removal - HELP

I am stuck on removing the radio from a 230SL.  The 230sl is different than a 280sl.  Can anyone provide some guidance?  Thanks.

What part is proving difficult? Have you removed everything and done all but extract the body of the radio from the dash?

First thing is to disconnect the neg on the battery!!!!------remove the glove box first-----then remove both under dash pieces-the one with the interior light in it and the one under the radio-both are vinyl covered. That will reveal the small thin chrome trim-remove that also-that reveals the radio plate that attaches with 2 screws-----you will need to remove the clock-it comes out with your hand going through the glove box opening and unscrewing the thumbscrew-the rest is to remove the radio-its right there -I dont know how yours is attached to the back-All new radios use a cage that the radio slips into---that hole is the correct sie for all standard radios----it will fit perfectly

Mine (Becker) removes quite easily. Remove the two knobs and the left bass control lever. Then slip off the faceplate. Loosen the two vertical wedge clips, and the radio will slip right out (still need to unattach the various wires...).

My radio is a Becker Mexico.  I have removed the glove box, clock, two lower panels and the radio is loose (via removing knobs, face plate and side mounts), but it is too tall to fit through the opening and it is too wide to slip out through the glove box area.  Will it go through the speaker opening?

It seems it should be simple but it doesn't appear to be.

That's odd, my Becker Mexico slid right out. I didn't have to take the knobs or face plate frame off until I removed it from the dash. Have you removed the bracket from the back? That may be hanging up on you, it is held onto the back of the radio by one screw.

Here's a look at the dash with everything removed and the radio panel after it was removed. (you can see my technique for keeping track of fasteners, I put them in a baggie and attach it to whatever was taken off)

I guess I should add my radio is not the original and my dash opening has been altered -- so that may be why mine comes out so easily.

Paddy - I think you removed more of your interior than necessary if you were just trying to get the radio out.    :D   Scott
