replace suspension springs?
« on: March 07, 2005, 21:01:19 »
ok,
getting serious about pulling the rear end. just read up on the first steps.  Since I have to pull the road springs and center spring on the rear axle should I replace them with new oem or progressive rate springs?

suggestions?

thx

Go with the progressive rate springs, but I am biased as I have a set for sale right now.  But check with others in the group.  Also see my previous posts on the benefits of progressive rate springs.

Why do think about replacing them ?

Mine are 39 years old now and still
fine.

If you can talk Tom out of the progressive rate springs cheap  :D  I'd go for it, they are a big improvement over OEM.

Merrill,
It is always a good idea to replace parts of our cars but, why are you considering replacement of the springs. If the car is riding at the correct height replacement of the springs is probably not needed. Also why are you dropping the rear end. I would like to hear some of the symptoms you are trying to rectify.
I have found that replacing rubber on our cars really makes a huge difference. Noises go away and the car rides better.
Ted 1969 280sl Maybe I am too fixated on rubber?

Ted,
Well I'm pulling the rear end to restore the brakes, r/r the axle bearings, and paint the rear end. Might as well r/r the subrframe mounts etc....

This car has been in hawaii for 20 years  and has lots of surface rust on the axle etc.  Hasn't been touched in about 10 years.
body looks great.

I don't really care if i install oem or progressive springs, i figure while I have them out i might as well replace them.

thx

Tom,
what is the difference in cost between the oem springs and progressive?  I scanned the forum last night and saw a post that had almost $1000 for all 5 springs.
that seems like a lot to me for springs.

anyway, since I am diy all of this i want something that will slip in and not need a lot of meesing with.  Ie. verifying road height etc....

thx
