Alloy "Bundt" wheels

I have my alloy "bundt" wheels stripped and ready for painting, however before I take them to the paint shop, I wanted to know if anyone has instead of painting their alloy wheels, had them polished and clear coated?  Also, does anyone know if the original alloy wheels (options for the W113s in the later years of their run) were polished or painted when delivered from the factory?

  I had mine polished - no coatings.  I don't drive it in bad weather. After about 10 years, they look great. I occasionally polish them with simichrome - less than once a year. They have never tarnished, always look great, but probably not a good solution for a frequent driver.

They were originally painted.

Hello,

Powder coating is the most durable finish with the original look. Painting with a good epoxy or a two stage urethane will also work but not last as long as powdercoat. All painted wheels should have a clear coat.
