interest in 111 112 coupes and cabs
« on: October 27, 2008, 22:44:10 »
I've been helping an associate look for a nice 280 SE 3.5 coupe and have found myself enlighted with the 111 112 series cars particularly Cabs and Coupes.

I'm trying to find websites specific to these cars and to find some active 111 112 chat sites like this to appitize my interest in these beautiful machines.

I'm all ears to my fellow forum members aboard for any direction given.

Hello Perry,

Yes these coupes and cabs are quite timeless classics! You'll need tons of cash to buy a nice cab, but you can find a good used coupe for a bargain. The V8 versions are the hardest to come by and demand a premium. These cars have massive amounts of wood, chrome, and leather. And with all limited production Mercedes, parts are exceptionally high in cost. Find a nice example because restoring one of these is very expensive because of those reasons. Much of the mechanicals are the same or similar to the W113 cars (except the V8s engines). We have a local MBCA club memeber who has an excellent mostly original W112 300SE coupe. His advanced age is requiring his sale of this prize possesion. If anyone is looking, and you do not mind air suspension, it is a very nice one and next to show quality.
It has the alloy engine, AC, automatic trans, but no sunroof.

As far as the 108s are concerned, the V8 RHDs were made in tiny numbers: something like 250 of the coupe and 70 of the convertible.

No price premium for RHD then!

But there are not a legion of sites - certainly I can see nothing like here. Does this help?

The Mercedes Benz Club America, www.mbca.org, in its Forum section has an active discussion about

The 111 coupe is one of the most elegantly styled cars ever made. This is why I own one (plus s parts car). I don't care for the cabriolets for a few reasons: (1) too expensive, (2) already have a convertible in the 113, (3) no rear window --which to me is one of the highlights of the design. You can't go wrong buying one! (usual advice applies here: buy the best example you can afford)

I agree with all that has been said. Since I work on my 111, I personally prefer the 2.8 L six because it is less complicated and easier to work on than the V-8 and they are less expensive to purchase. Not as much power though.

Here is a nice web site that has a lot of info. http://www.heckflosse.nl/

Very nice Waqas! Mine '68 is a dark olive w/ cognac.

Wallace,
We absolutely need to plan another central-Texas w111/w113 gathering one of these days...

Hello John,

The 300SE coupe is dark grey with light grey top. It is the original color combination. I believe some of the paint to be original. I will try to post a picture here.

The 111 coupes are nicer cars than the 113 cars in most respects. That may not go over well around here but it's the truth.
When new they were more exspensive but today you can buy them for less than half the price of an average 113. I drove a 220SEb for 5 years and a 250SE for about one year - long before I ever drove a 113.
They share most of the 113 drive train but are more comfortable and are just as nice looking but they have much more room inside. I actually have some leg room in a coupe.
The sad thing is they cost more to restore than a 113 or certainly not less so most have been parted out years ago. These are very nice cars that have just about no following and are very under priced for what you get.

I still have my 3.5 coupe. It runs but needs a complete restoration.

I have several pagodas, 600 grosser, and a 220se cabrio converted to 280 5 speed with 3.69 rear axle from a 3.5se This is a wonderfull car. I have worked restoring cars for 35 years and think that this is the nicest car i have ever driven.
