Just bought a 1966 230SL
« on: November 25, 2008, 01:25:53 »
I just bought a 1966 230SL with 56,298 original miles as stated on the title.  There are  a few oil change and service stickers in the door jam that help verify the mileage.  The car is white with 115 trim code navy blue interior MBtext seats.  It came from California and is rust free with what appears to be one repaint.  The paint is show condition right down to the notch near the head light chrome.  I am sure I will have questions as I get to know my car better.  I also have a 61 220 Sb (since 1987)and a 73 280 SE4.5 (since 1997)

There is a knob near the hood release under the dash,  what does it do?  I haven't driven anywhere yet since it is snowing here so I don't want to start and shut the car off for a few minutes unless I can warm it up the whole way.

Difficult to say what that knob is. Do you have the data card? That would help to understand its options.

I don't have the data card.  The classic center didn't have a complete data card but they had key codes and the trim # was 115.  Where is the fuel filter on the car?  I want to change it.  The car sat for about twenty years and the guy I bought it from put on a new fuel pump and cleaned the gas tank.  I filled it today and ran it for a little and it was smooth then started sputtering like lack of fuel.  It has only traveled 71 miles since the tank was cleaned.  Another question... The oil cap on the fuel injection pump...  do I have to put in oil, if so how much?  I think any problems I am going to have are the fuel system from not being run.  Eveything else looks good.  I am looking for my service manual for this car.  I know I have a few that cover it.

I have a 1966 which has a knob near the hood release. Mine is for the 4 way flashers.

Badali, did you get an answer as to whether you have to put oil in that fuel injection pump?  And if so, how much?  Obviously, that is a question I have had too.

Thanks......

Oil should be in the fuel injection pump, but only to the full level indicated on the pump dipstick on the side.  Overfull and you can cause a rich condition.  Check the owner's manual for instructions.  280s are self lubed.

I checked the cap and it is just a cap not a dipstick.  I am not sure if it needs oil or not. ???  I still want to check the entire fuel system since the car was in storage nearly 20 years.  This car is a time capsule.

As I mentioned, the dipstick is on the right side as you are facing the cap, not in the cap.  You need to look from the windshield area down to the pump to see it and then reach waaaaaay down.  Sometimes it's easier from underneath.  It has a "T" on top of it, but also a provision for a screwdriver.  I can't remember if you check the oil level with the dipstick screwed in or just set in without screwing.
