Buyer Beware!! Whose Car is this?
« on: January 22, 2009, 16:56:12 »
Who knows this car - The VIN is 113 044 12-021674          It is probably a member's car that is being sold without his/her knowledge.. Light metallic Blue 280 sl in very very good condition.   On Sunday I won a bid on a beautiful 280 SL  on Ebay for a moderate price. Immediately the seller asked me to wire the money via bank to bank transfer.  This is an excerpt from his email  ..."Hi Ben, My husband bought this car for me in 2005. I am the third owner and the restoration was done by the previous owner. The car has 69000 original miles. No work has been done to the engine. The car is an original California car so I guess it had no rust before the repaint. I have attached plenty of photos that show the condition of the car. If you have more questions regarding the condition of the car, please let me know. I want to clear everything before we proceed. The payment will go to my accountant via wire transfer. You haven't told me yet if you want to pick up the car yourself or if I should start and prepare for shipping. Are there any issues with the payment, do you have the funds available? I'm ready to sell this car.   He even has lots of pictures.

I checked with Ebay security and it was confirmed that it was fraud.  I have the pictures of the car that the seller sent me -I just dont know how to put it up here.  Ebay warned me to stay clear of the seller and that the seller had used someone's ebay ID to cause this.  I am only hoping that the true owner of this gorgeous car is aware of this.

Sorry that purchase did not work out for you Ben. But by the looks of your signature you have a few winners already!  :o

Ben

The sleuth in me thinks it could be your spouse trying to discourage you from adding to your collection....

(Seriously though, thanks for alerting us.)

I saw a light blue metallic pagoda for sale a few months ago I think on ebay that a friend of mine was interested in buying.  He showed me the beautiful photos including one of the engine bay.  Well the car had a m117 V8 in it and the hood opened toward the windshield.  Clearly a R107 SL engine bay was photographed along with a pagoda body.  Scammers abound!
