firewall pad...waffle pattern
« on: January 28, 2009, 22:23:52 »
Just received from the MB dealer, for a 1970 280se Coupe 111-025,  pn 111-682-6620. A complete (2pc) firewall pad in, guess what... a WAFFLE pattern material similar to 113 OG style!!
The word from the dealer is that currently MB sells for 113 only "cardboard" by the square meter. Havent seen what it looks like. Is the waffle available again or is this a red herring?

Also, how thick this firewall padding?

The firewall pad in my 111 is over twice as thick as the one in my 113. In general, there are insane amounts of padding in a 111 due to it's higher build quality (and much higher price-tag in the 60s), but I don't know if the firewall padding in my 111 is original or not.

I'll try to post a pic. I always see "file too large". Yes, this is much thicker than 113 stuff also, Ive seen many a 111 and they always have a pebbly/leather grain. Except for maybe the earliest 220s. kb

Hi KB,
this looks different compared to the original "diamond" pattern in a W113 (see picture).
And I am wondering whether it is actually close to the original W111 pattern.  ???
Did your pad for the W111 come pre-cut from Mercedes or in bulk?
(BTW, maximum attachment size for pictures, etc is 256 KB).

Its much closer to 113s than most 111s. This may be a slightly smaller rectangle, but except for early 111s ie the 2.2 series, on every 111 that I can remember (which is a fair number) the pattern was much more akin to a leather grain, incidentally, the original which I scraped off of this firewall was absolutely "leather" grained. My '67 250se Cab with 67k orig miles has the leather look, my '69 280se coupe as well. I think my 356a Porsche engine/trunk/floor tar paper is the most 113 like I've seen. Someone should order some 113 firewall "cardboard" and see what they get!
