Aluminum prep ?
« on: March 11, 2009, 02:02:15 »
Hi,
I am well on the way in preping my 1970 280 SL for the paint shop. I stripped the car of all chrome and other stuff and did some body and rust work myself which worked out very well.
......However, I am somewhat reluctant to touch any of the aluminum parts, the bottom of the doors in particular where the paint seems to have "wrinkled".
Is there anything I can do myself ( to cut the labour cost at the shop) or should I best leave it to the experts?

Any expert advise  would be much appreciated !

Extensive alumimum corrosion is not common on these doors.  I would strip all the paint and bondo with a chemical stripper and leave the professionals to make the doors "look right".

Witt,

There was a similar question very recently on the topic. http://www.sl113.org/forums/index.php?topic=10308.0

Prepping aluminum is a bit different than steel.  Go to the technical website and or the local reps of the paint manufacturer you have chosen and research it thoroughly before investing in anything.  Do it once, but do it right.

In addition, you might find out which body shops in your area have been certified by Jaguar for their aluminum body work refinishing--very few are.  A visit and a look-see might give you some good information.
