Ben, does your soft top have a wooden bow / crossmember? It should be wrapped in cloth just above the rear window, similar to a W 111 or even a 356 Cabriolet. Every early 230 SLs should have this.
If you do, you may want to consider purchasing the chrome piece that nails into it from the top. It's a nice touch that was lost on subsequent Pagodas. (I'll leave it to Achim give more details on this unusual feature.)

Poor Ben !
Did that <<really>> happen to your SL?  :?:  :( How is the car going now?
As to the chrome strip above the rear window...
Not all 1964 230 SLs had that but only up to VIN 006000 something. That means only spare wheel well 230ies can have such a chrome piece but not all of them.
Thus, the chrome strip is original for some cars with serial nos. like 001600 and 005917 (both Euro versions :| )
I go and check the numbers again for you if you like.
Sonett, why did you sold that nice car? Nice Europa version, nice color, nice fuel filler cap, etc. ...?

I sold it because to make the nice, it would require a lot of cash, car had some marginal body work done over the years, bad paint, some rust, maybe a lot.
and I found this, a much better color combination, and this car is soooo nice, never had a speck of rust.

Beautiful car Mr. Saab!
The Saab Sonnett was a prestigious car in the seventies here in Holland - only ten in the country. My father had 4 successive Saab 96's: one two-stroke (add a quart of oil to the gasoline with each fill-up), and three 4-strokes (with the V-4 Ford engine). The 96 is a classic now, which here can still be found for low-low prices...

well, ok, here's the sonett...this one, I personally restored from the ground up...when I found it, it was in boxes, mostly disassembled, and the parts were mixed in with parts from many other vintage saabs....2 years later, I had a complete car that has won a prize at every show I have brought it to, and many "best in class" awards.  Oh, it is chassis #43 of 258 2-stroke sonetts ever built.

Sorry guys I posted this thread but never checked back, so I missed all these replies !
Funney photo ehh ?  My friend made it up, the wife wasn't happy. It is me and it is my car!
Yes my car had the chrome trim piece and I still have it but when I replaced the top I never put it back on. I was afraid it would cause leaks or eventually tear the hood !!
What do you think, does anyone have experience of either ??
Sonnet nice cars BTW !!

Put the chrome bar on -- it's one of the nice touches that these cars lost over time. It won't leak.

Well I agree it IS a lovely touch but it'll have to wait 'till better weather when I take the hard top off. I reckon I'll dig it out and have it ready though !!
