Overhauling Starter.

I have stripped down my 280sl starter and have 2 questions.
  1-What is the best method to remove the circlip on the drive end that holds the bendix drive stop?
   2-On the bendix drive there is a friction ring,is this bonded to the assy: ?(mine is broken).

I don't know how much this will help, but I have a starter snap-ring tool that I purchased form the Snap-On man 35years ago. It is not marked whith a brand or part number, but i will attach a photo.

Not sure what it is that you are calling a "friction ring" it sounds line the plastic end cap that was added to the Bosch, rebuilt replacement starters, I believe its function was to seal the starter motor from bell housing when the starter was not in use.

If this is the case you will need to specify that you have a replacement starter when you order a new Bindex (pinion) drive.

Having been through a few nightmares with a starter, my suggestion is this:

The best way to overhaul the starter is to take the old one out, and exchange for a Bosch factory-remanufactured one.

In the long run it might be the easiest and least-costly method, and certainly will involve the least amount of time.

If you are overhauling a starter my guess is there are other things on the "to-do" list that take time and money, and not all of them can be as easy as an exchange for a factory remanufactured unit.

You can probably exhange at the CC, at a dealer, or at many Bosch authorized service centers around the globe.

Starters and alternators are one of the easy things to get for our cars. The Early Alternator is one exception but for the most part they can be rebuilt or you can but a rebuilt unit.

Probably easier than finding a proper oil filter.

Thank you gentlemen for your input ,i probably misled  you with the term overhaul,as part of my renovation of the vehicle it is my intention to strip, clean and rebiuld all the ancillary equipment.
The starter motor is in good condition internally i just have these 2 queries
I also get enjoyment out of doing it myself, sad isnt it.

Hello,

While your at it, make sure you have the heavier duty starter as used on the latest W113 cars.  You get 30% more cranking power. It can be used on all these cars. If I recall you need to use one different bolt.   Look at the PS  (horse power stamped on the outer case) to see if yours is the 1.3 PS the earlier ones were .9 PS  .    The replacement number for the Bosch rebuilld  is SR59X i believe.
