will these parts work together
« on: February 15, 2009, 18:24:20 »
Hi Folks,

I've been trying to get my '66 230SL back together and on the road.  The PO had the engine out and put in new rings and bearings.  I've recently come across a dealer's parts book and gotten the data card for the car.  Here's what I found:

1.  The block is not original.  The block with the car has the VIN number for the car stamped into the metal above a small riveted tag.  The tag shows stamped in:

127 010 41 00  with "80" stenciled, painted, in behind.  The 80 was part of this little tag.  The parts book indicates that this is a replacement engine, short block I guess, and a member says the 80 means it was rebuilt.  I ran this number by the group in another thread.

The block has a casting number: 127 011 08 01.

2.  The head has the number on the casting:

127 010 50 20

The book's listing for the head:

127 010 56 20

So this must be a replacement head.

3.  The injection pump has the number:

PES6KL70A120R18

This web site lists the proper pump as a R11.

My questions are: what model cars are the head and pump from?  And will these parts work together?  The engine is almost together.  I have to free up 3 pistons in the injection pump and reinstall it.  I'm getting the golf tees today, as per the instructions from JoeA.

Thanks in advance for any help with the numbers.

Ron

Hello Ron,

Good questions...
Your short block is correct! Congratulations!
However, the cast number on the head cannot be correct. It _must_ begin with the digits 127... or 129.... and indicates then a 230 SL or 250 SL/SE head. Everything else does not fit - especially not a 120. As to my memories an M130 head (280 SE/SL) also does not fit the earlier short blocks. At least this cannot result in any useful combo ...

Joe (JA), Dan (Benz Dr.)  and others told us a 250 SE head will work fine on a M127 short block ...

As to the pump ... ah, no. Yours must be a pump of a 250 SE (or SL, those are identical) as far as my numerical memories tell me right now...
The 250 SE pump fits on the short block and you probably also will be able to get the engine running... But there is nobody around who ever recommended doing so.
The better choice is try to get an original R11 pump.

Good luck with your engine and keep us updated

correct head numbers

Hi Achim, you are correct that is an incorrect head, I had the wrong numbers there.  There should be a 127 at the start not 120.  Thanks to JoeA who also questioned this.  (I'm dyslexic, no secret now.)

I changed the original post to the correct 127 numbers.  The feedback I've gotten implies this combination will work, correct head and block, and a 250 pump, which may have to be leaned some to get best performance.
