anyone have a good source for Oil coolers, rebuilders

the oil cooler in My 1970 280 SL is rusty and leaking.
Does anyone have a good source that can rebuild the core or where to purchase new or used?

Millers Benz (www.millersbnz.com) has the 280SL oil cooler listed at $978.50

However Adsitco (http://www.adsitco.com/category.asp?CID=977) has the same oil cooler listed for $355.50 !!  That is quite a price difference.

Hello,

The original oil coolers on these cars are steel and are brazed together. This heavy duty construction is needed for the high pressures the system carries especially when the oil is cold.  Rust causes leaks in the steel cores and weakens many other areas with pits.  I do no know of anyone making good lasting repairs on these.

The oil coolers on the W108 4.5 sedans are all aluminum construction and are the same size.  However they are on the opposit side of the radiator, but it looks like they could work. Has anyone tried these?  They do not have the rust problem.

Yes, there was one of these aluminum ones from a 107 that one of the guys at the last PUB at Blacklick was trying to sell. Looked like it would do the job - only the drain plug would end up at the top but the bottom line could always be used for draining it.

Also look at one from an early W114.
The end is  mounted with large O rings but once you take the rubber strips off, they are the same as the 113s. The only thing missing is the 2 captive nuts that bolt it to the 113 body. The holes are already drilled though. You could probably use appropriate 'nutserts' to do the job.

The part # is stamped on the side where the bolts (to the body) go.

Shud be 108 180 0165 or 0265 if its a later one.

Now, the six cylinder W108 (280 series with M130 engines carbureted or injected) sedans have exactly the same oil cooler. Same part number and I believe the W113 cars have a 108 part number. Only the v-8s have the aluminum cooler on the oposite side.

Yes,  many of the W114 cars had a very similar steel cooler, different mounting and no drain plug on these versions.

This may sound strange, but find a radiator re builder and give them a call.

often they can take measurements and order a new core for you.

I would be interested in knowing of a radiator rebuilder who can replace steel cores which are brass welded together into these units. This is quite a bit different from the standard soldered together copper radiators used in coolant systems.
