cut up Pagoda
« on: May 13, 2009, 05:07:50 »

Excuse me for clogging the forum with something caused by my failing memory.  Was there a set of photos on this site from someone who had cut up a rusted Pagoda?  I've done several searches and can't seem to find it again.  I'm especially interested in a cut through the rocker area, mid door, to see how that is constructed.  Thanks in advance, Ron

Ron, if the cut up pagoda was a red one, then that was me.
I'm not free till about 3 weeks.  Wedding bells in the background.
Then I can send the photos to you.
Best,

Thanks Anfinn.  Wow, my car is not that bad.  The "frame side rail" is the part I'm curious about.  Does it over lap with the floor pan?  Does it go on top or bottom with that lap?

Walter, congrats on the wedding bells.  Honeymoon in the 220SL D?

My memory says your posts should be findable on the site, and I just can't remember what the subject was.  So I'm not sure it was your car.  It was red, I think.

Walter, that's it!  Thanks so much.  I see now why my searches did not work.  I did find this post in my slow reading through the site, but could not remember the subject line.

What has happened on my car, a '66, unknown history, is that on the "frame side rail" on the right side someone has brazed (brass or copper, it is a gold bead) a flat sheet at the bottom.  It is welded on edge to the floor pan and front and rear edges are welded to the respective fender bottoms.  On the outside it passes under the outside "rocker", the curved part under the door, as it should.  To finish this repair, a rubber coating was applied along the crack between the welded plate and the curved "rocker".  That was allowing rust to start on the rocker, so I'm pulling all that coating off.  The crack that should be there is starting to be uncovered and rust can sanded and covered properly.

That area of the car is very strange to me.  I've never seen anything like it.
