M130 oil pressure relief valve on oil pump - needed?
« on: May 25, 2009, 01:09:07 »
Hey Guys!

I am just finishing up my M130 rebuild and getting it ready to go back into my chassis.  I am replacing a tired 2.2L engine and have to swap a few items including the oil pan of the old motor onto the new M130 before getting it under the hood...  Trouble I am having is that the oil pan that I need to use has an interferance with the over-pressure valve on the outlet side of the oil pump.  The easiest fix would seem to be removing the valve and plugging the hole.

I am attaching a photo of the engine and the oil pump with the valve removed (hole next to oil pickup tube).

What are your thoughts on doing this?  Are there specific problems with too high of oil pressure?  The older engine obviously did not have this part.

Here is another pic with the valve attached.  It clearly is a piston and spring with an opening on the side fo the body after enough pressure pushes against the piston...  I beleive I know its function, but need some clarity if this is an essential part to leave in!

Thanks in advance for your comments!

Oil filter housings and oil coolers can only hold so much pressure before they pop (more likely blow a gasket).   I would say you need that RV to protect the system on cold starts.  Eliminating it would be very risky.

I should have also added that you could close couple a 90 degree elbow in the threaded connection and turn the RV horizontal to lower its profile.

Now, that's an idea...  Hmm...  right angle.  Might be some interesting machine work to do that!

The M130 block has an oil pressuere release inside the timing chain housing to the right of the distributor drive housing. The relief valve on the pump is for the M110 (twin cam) engine. the M110 pump is superseded to the replacement for many of the earlier engines.

So I would say no the relief valve is not neeeded for a M130 engine.

Al is right but there's a bit more to it I think.

There's an early and a late oil pump. The early pump has no RV and the late one does. The late pump has a 114 part number so I suppose it is for the 110 engine. The late 280SL engine with ribbed oil pan uses this pump. This pump has a small rubber cuff on the bottom of the strainer. DO NOT use this pump in early engine - it's to be used with the ribbed pan only. The rubber cuff will get crushed on early engines because the pan is not as deep as on the late ribbed pans.

I'd be thinking, '' Do I even have the right pump for this engine? ''

Here is my right angle fitting for this beast!  I also found that this enigne uses TWO pressure relief valves.  Go figure.  Been a lot time since I tore down the dirty ole block!

And yes, this is the right oil pump for the engine.  I pulled the entire engine from a '72 250C and it will be finding a home in a 404 Unimog.  Definately a different oil pan, hence the space issue.  Not bone stock, but keeping it in the MB family.   :)
