I don't get it a "resto-mod" as Barrett jackson would put it.  Is the original Sl ruined? why not just get an original sl and and buy an sls- liklely cost similar cash and you'd have a warranty covered daily driver as well as a garage queen 300sl investment.  This is a car for someone with ridculous money and no appreciation for originality.

What a hideous mess and a waste of a beautiful car.

I think it looks great.

The fact that it was done by AMG surely would attract some sort of credibility to the final production.

I imagine serious (deep pockets) car collectors will be interested.

Let's not get too sensitive about this topic. :-X
I'm not really going to buy it you know. ;)

I see it as a celebration of a vintage Mercedes made 8 years before ours, unfortunately they don't make cars like this anymore ::)
To see the time being spent on a vintage gullwing these days while trying to keep its originality is a sight for sore eyes.

Good to hear your opinions though. ::)

It seems like a waste of an original. They make kit bodies they could have done the same thing with...
I however do like the look. It just seems like buying a Rembrandt to get Picasso to paint a picture over it, when a new canvas would have worked as well.

You all missed the point.  Nothing was wasted!  They probably had a shell and an incomplete car...so it was alot cheaper to do what they did than to find parts, engine....if they can even find the stuff.  I doubt anyone took a pefectly good restorable 300sl and converted into this mess. For that kind of money give me the real stuff....I think anyone who pays 450k for this is either crazy or have so much money that its pocket change to them and they dont care.

Aside from what the text describes as "customer specified" touches (The wheels and mirrors), I believe this car looks fantastic... a waste of an original car would be to let it sit, rot or rust away, but creating something more out of it definitely gives the car a new life.

Too bad you can't afford it... I was going to mail my $3 to your paypal account, but I guess I'll just wait till you find something more accessible.

Cheers,
Andres

There is a company in Germany that uses a modern mercedes coupe engine/drive train and builds vintage 300 SL roadsters.

They have a healthy supply of orders and have been in business for a number of years with satisfied customers.

While I understand those that may feel that way,  in my opinion I don't think its a waste and in fact looks very nicely done and interesting. We have all seen many butchered cars and this is far from that. At one point I would never have thought much of a car that is altered in such a way but my thought has evolved on that front especially if the work is properly and carefully done by Benz experts as it would appear to have been in this example. Not to say I would go that route in my 280SL.... but then again my pockets are not as deep as the individual who had this work done.

Does AMG do these kind of things as they deem appropriate or interesting to them or is it a matter of how much is in your checkbook when you arrive at their door? I suspect the later.

Come to think about it I don't know a whole lot about AMG, perhaps discussing AMG and what they can/might do with vintage Mercedes may be an interesting topic in and of itself.

It seems like everyone is trying to capitalize on resto classic cars I would venture that that would raise the value of an orginal? I read yesterday in my ford mustang club magazine that Lee Iacocca is now branding his own name to the high performance Ford Mustangs.  Not that it has anything to do with classic retro cars. Still when you consider the orginal, it is like trying to remake a good movie a second time over with out the orginal cast.

while many of these resto classics will attract many new buyers , We can say we own the orginal.
