Oil Filter upper seal
« on: January 08, 2004, 00:01:53 »
I am about to do a routine oil and filter change and wanted to be sure to check and replace if necessary the seal at the block end of the filter.  The question is what does this seal look like?  I picked up a 000 184 33 80 which I think is the correct part number but it just looks like a short section of hose, is this the correct part number? This is for a 68' 250SL.

I will change the filter next week if all goes as expected but I thought the correct part number was 000 184 17 80?

Anyone have the correct info on this?

Thanks

Dan,
The 'hose' like seal 000 184 3380 seals the filter element on the filter head. With the filter kit, you will also get a large 'O' ring which seals the filter bowl with the filter head. Be sure to remove the old one! You should fit only one of the 'O' rings.
The 000 184 1780 is the 'donut' like seal that goes at the bottom of the filter bowl. While you are at it, its a good idea to change this one as well (unless its been recently done?).
Hope this helps.

To amplify Naj's warning, I recently replaced the large O ring at the top w/o removing the old one which was VERY well hidden in place. Result: The filter housing cracked & had to be replaced ($$$). Such experience provides lessions not to be forgotten! Tip: probe gently the bottom of the groove with a dental pick to be sure.    -JP-
