Exhaust Leak
« on: August 13, 2009, 12:51:04 »
I have a 1964 230SL with the original header like exhaust manifolds.  On one of them the effects of exhaust gas erosion of the metal where the pipe mates is difficult to get properly sealed with the original metal seal ring.  I still leak slightly.

I am in the process of modifying a more modern aluminized steel exhaust donut to fit and crush it into the sealing area.  Has anyone else had to deal with this issue and found an off the shelf kind of fix?

I know if I can modify the seal ring the way I intend it will work.  But it is a pain.  The prior owner used a sealing material and I had a miserable time separating the pipe from the header when I restored the car.  I had to re-weld the bell on the end of the header.

Any thoughts?
