Hi Mike,

As you know the switching takes place inside the black plastic piece on the end of the stalk.  The two sections are glued together so you can't really get at the switches to clean them.  The arm can be replaced  but  its very expensive.  Its a dealership type item.  Maybe 400 to 600 USD.  Others may have purchased one more recently and have a better handle on the cost.  Mine was $400 15 years ago at the dealership.

Jeff is correct about the 2-speed switch, but the issue with turning them off is most likely the control relay on the right fender.  (I almost wrote driver's side, oops)

This is what I grew up with as a rachet relay.  Every time it is signalled by the driver it snaps down and flips the mechanism on or off.   As they get old they tend to jam a little bit and will not always change position.  If you take off the cover you can see what I mean.  Generally they have one position that doesn't want to switch from.  Mine currently also has occasional problems turning off.

New relay for this problem.

SL club Pagode was selling them a couple of years back - think I saw them in Essen last year. Not original but new. A couple of hundred Euro rings a bell. May be worth a search

Pagodenteile sells them: http://www.pagodenteile.de/20.htm at € 318. You pay less if you ship him the old part in exchange for refurbishment: €193. Prices assume you are outside of the European Union for VAT purposes, otherwise add 20%

These switches are handed, so you want one for RHD.

An LHD one will fit, but the markings will become upside down.
