Location of Speedo, Tach cables
« on: January 23, 2004, 11:56:18 »
Hi All

Does anyone know the definitive (original, as they came from the factory) routing of the speedometer cable through the firewall? Does it go along with the coolant temperature sending tube, through the top of the two identically sized holes located by the brake booster?

I believe the lower hole has the oil pressure hose and what else? the speedo or the tachometer cable.

Thanks for your help,
Tom Colitt

Tom,
I can't answer that one, but it's nice to see your name out there again. Are you coming to Palm Springs in April ? Fashion Island is canceled this year, so we're trying to get as many MBs out there as we can. We're featuring the Gullwing this year for its 50th anniversay. Should be a great show. We aslo have an 1895 Benz Mylord Landaulet entered. Same guy is also showing a 1939 (?)BMW motorcycle and a 1918 Opel. See www.palmspringscarclassic.com for more info.

Tom:

Recently re-did the tach and speedo cables on the mostly original '71...

The speedo used the lower of the two holes in the fire wall. The lower hole for the speedo cable makes sense since it goes to a lower part of the engine...the oil line shared this hole.

The tach used the higher hole along with the water temp line. I had to partially remove the water line to allow the new tach cable to pass thru...those holes don't have much room.

The "definitive" answer might have to wait until we find an old photo taken just after production which shows the cables...

Hi Tom.

I hesitate to say definitively -- but I know mine has not changed in about 24 years... 1963 230SL:

Top hole = Tach and a wire to the TTS area on block (coolant temp. sending tube?)...

Bottom hole = Speedo and oil pressure line.

Hope this helps.

Hi Guys and thanks a lot for the consensus. I'm going with it.
Tom. I've been meaning to call you. If you still need judges for this years event, I will committ to it immediately.

Regards, Tom
