Front oil seal thrower ring

Does anyone know whether the oil thrower ring on the 230SL 127 engine and shown as adjacent the crankshaft front oil seal is required? Mine was missing when the crankshaft was removed and it is not clear whether it should be refitted with the new seal.

The attachment is from the 230SL BBB.  Apparently you need a different seal if the oil thrower ring is installed.  Hope this helps.
