tachometer drive gear connector seal

Hi,

Can anyone give an easy way to get the seal out of the tach cable connector?  The connector screws into the block and the tach cable screws into the connector.  If you take the connector out (127 060 00 46), the seal (120 261 00 80) is on the engine side of the connector, and recessed into it.  I have the new seal, and it looks like a press fit into the connector, but how does the old one get removed?

I've used a Dremel tool bit to remove all the rubber seal material, but the metal ring is still in there.  There was little rubber left to remove.  Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

I had this same problem many years ago--1978- on my 230SL. My first indication was when I had oil dripping from under the dash. It was riding up through the tach cable to the tach where it was exiting. Great way to lubricate the cable and tach but it sure caused a mess!! Bottom line is I tried to change just the seal and ran into the same problem you got. I ended up buying the whole cap assembly with the seal already installed. I'm sure there is a way to heat the outter assemby and remove the seal. but I couldn't do it.

Hey George, you made my day!  Sometimes I think I'm too old for the car, as I don't see the obvious as well as I used to. 

I think I'll try boiling it in water for a start.  The connecter is quite expensive, so I'll try getting what's left of the seal out.

Hello Ron,
Whilst you have the Dremel,use the small grinding wheel and grind a groove in the outer oil seal casing,just before you come to the ally: housing you will be able to use a small screwdriver and remove the old seal ,worked for me.
