Rear axle - shipping

I need to ship a complete rear axle from Sarasota, Florida to Oroville, Washington.  It weighs about 300lbs and is in a crate measuring roughly 66x19x22 inches. UPS has quoted me $1,123.25 to ship which is 50% more than it cost to ship my whole car from LA to Oroville. Does anybody have any ideas or suggestions?

Hello auret,

You can contact a trucking company to do it much less expensive. If you are not a business and do not have a  dock, they may charge additional fees.  Request "lift gate pick-up".   An alternative is to contact the shipping company and drop it off at their truck terminal to save additional fees. 

Shop around, there are hundreds of trucking companies out there, all anxious for the business in this economy.  Fed X Freight (ground) is an option also.

If you are not in a hurry, always request the most economical option. 

Regular business are also given big discounts on shipping so if you know someone with a business who ships on a regular basis, you may want them to ship it for you.

I recently shipped a MB transmission by Fed X Freight ground for $60.00 and dropped it off at there terminal.

It's thev way you boxed it up that costs so much. The crate is probably half the shipping weight.
 All we do is place the axel on a pallet and strap it down with all-round. I put some cardboard around the ends and put some 2X4's around the bottom of the axel tubes to keep it level. This works pretty good.
 I shipped one from Detroit to Texas for about $200.00
