Problem axial play king pin

Hello.
At this moment i'm busy with new king pins and the bushes.
The bushes are pressed in and reamed already.
The problem i have is in the axial play form the king pin.
At the top i have the thickest washer (the one with the round edges and 3.95mm thick), under this washer the one with the grooves.
Below i should use one of the compensating washers, depending at the axial play of the king pin.
But when i torque at specs (90Nm) i should use none of the washers to get the axial play from 0.05-0.10
So i have a few questions.
Is it safe to use none of the compensating washers below? Or is it a better idea to use one of the compensating washers at the the top so i can place another compensating washer at the bottom?

Hello,

The two machined and hardened "thrust washers" are used at the top. Be careful to align the notch in the lower of the two upper thrust washers with the pin in the king pin housing.  Also make sure the four oil grooves in the one thrust washer face the opposit thrust washer.  The correct shim is selected for use at the bottom of the assembly between the king pin housing and the knuckle (lower trunion). You will need to try or adjust several to find the correct shim. At times I have had to lap down shims. At other times no shim at all will be correct.  It varies with each car.

Remember you need some up and down clearance, there is a spec.  If you choose a shim too thick the king pin will bind when you tighten down the bottom 22mm nut. This will make the steering too stiff and it will it will not center automatically after a turn. Choosing a shim too thin will allow to much up and down free play and can cause noise on bumpy pavenment.

Since the lower portion of the king pin is tappered, the clearance will diminish as the nut is tightened so tend to leave a bit more clearance before torquing. Before moving onto the other side make sure the king pin and steering move freely!

These assemblies are frequently incorrectly assembled by others. Make sure the position and sequence of all the thrust washers and shims are correct. Pay special attention to make sure that the pin in the housing is aligned with the slot in the thrust washer or your shim settings will be off.

I did everthing correct. I noticed the pin in the king pin housing. I'm sure the grooved ring is correct installed.
From top to bottom:
- Thick hardened washer from 3.96 mm
- Washer with grooves, grooves facing up
- One of the three shims 2.70, 2.28 or 1.91 mm

Reading your post it's not a good idea to lap down the hardened washer at the top, or to change it with one of the shims.
I can imagine that because a great part of the weight of the car is resting on it.
But than i have still the same problem.
Even the thinnest shim is to thick. If i use the thinnest shim the king pin bind before í'm at the torque spec.
Leaving the shim away i'm very close to play from 0.05-0.1

In your answer you wrote "At other times no shim at all will be correct".
What did you do in that case? Is it ok to use no shim at all?

Hello

Yes, it is ok to use no spacer shim at the bottom if the clearance falls into specs. There is hardly any load on the bottom since the weight of the car is carried by the upper hardened thrust washers.
