I rebuilt my power steering box 4 years ago and basically the only thing I could find was a parts diagram.  If you have it apart you know the preload is set by adjustable tension on a spring.  I would try to set it up in the mid range area as a starting point.  Just make sure the 1/2 sphere is engaged snuggly in its receptor.

Rebuilt mine in September, marked and measured before dismantling. (as a rough idea) After reinstalling rebuilt box I felt it still had excessive play, corrected this by turning the adjusting screw  anti-clockwise (under accorn nut and lock nut).  This applies more tension on the pressure spring and sleeve assembly, which in turn pushes the ball pin further into the ball socket (in power piston), thereby reducing play in the box. Too much tension will result in binding so careful here. Remember play in the steering system is also a function of the condition of your other components tie rods, drag links, intermediate arm bushings etc, so excessive play in the steering  system cannot all be removed by adjusting the "magic screw" on the steering box.

Splendid idea Garry, but are you willing to defend the group against the Daimler lawyers?  ;)
The copyright laws are still valid and even PJ could get a call from one of them. One can make copies for "personal use" but that doesn't include helping a fellow Pagoda owner in distress. To bad, but that's how it is.

This is a 126 steering box but the photos might be of some help with your rebuild.

Alfred is right. But you can buy most of the BBB in pdf format from Mercedes Benz directly. See the bottom of the page here. So we can't insert those pdf files in the Tech Manual, much as we'd like.
