distributor question-am I in big trouble?
« on: March 03, 2004, 12:02:35 »
I had some time this morning so I ventured to the garage to study my electronic ignition issue.
I noticed that the shaft that holds the rotor moves unless I press down hard on it.  I never noticed this before.  I can turn the rotor freely.  When I press downward on the rotor whilst turning, it locks into place, but still has a little play in it.  Something tells me this is not good.  Am I in big trouble?
Thanks,
Don

No, Dan, probably not :)

Has the engine been running?
If so, undo the clamp at the base (5mm allen bolt) and press the body down as far (with the rotor engaged in its drive)as it will go and retighten clamp. The clamp is probably loose and the spring inside has pushed it up.
You can check that the base of the distributor housing will now be sitting on the clamp. There is only one place where the drive will engage and the leads hold the distributor in place so the timing can't go far out.
Recheck timing to ensure you have the correct setting.
The little play should be spring loaded so that when you release the rotor it returns to its original position. This is the centrifugal advance mechanism and if its spring loaded, it means it will be working!!
