Automatic transmission shift point?
« on: July 15, 2011, 22:07:25 »
My transmission shifts  from 3rd and 4Th allot on the winding roads up and down hills when going between 40-48 mph.  Is there an adjustment to keep it in 4Th at a lower speed?  Preferably at about 42 mph.  When driving back roads I would prefer it to stay in 4Th.  The speed limit seems to be at the edge of the shift point.

I'm no expert on automatic transmissions, but I think it may be possible to influence the shift points by adjusting the modulator pressure. Perhaps you can do a search on that term - have you checked the technical manual yet?

I haven't found the specific problem in the tech manual if it is even a problem or normal.  It just seems that it prefers to shift from 4th to 3rd under load or going up hill at 40-48 mph.

Brad,

When I drive Anthracite on the back roads in the same manner as you describe I place the transmission in "3" to avoid the shifting you describe. It revs the engine a little more but I find the extra noise and higher revs add to my driving experience. I drive with the drivers window down and the radio off for the full effect.

You might want to try this and see if it does anything for you.

Bob,
Thanks,  It sounds like the shift point is normal to you then.  As you know in Pa there are a lot of winding hilll back roads.  I'll see you next week when you stop by.
