Stall on Long Incline, Fuel Pump?
« on: April 12, 2010, 00:51:26 »
???  OK, I thought the first time it happened I had run out of gas since my gauge is not working correctly but I know it is not that because this time I had just filled up.  On long inclines the car starts to stutter, and will eventually stall (happened twice now in exactly the same location).  It is a 4 speed 66 230SL.  After the car has sat for 15 or 20 minutes it will star again but I can feel it continue to stutter and eventually quits again.  If I leave it for a long period, say at least a few hours, it will start and run just fine.  It does not seem to overheat because the gauge reads 80C and I have taken it on much longer drives that don't involve long inclines and it drives beautifully.  I am wondering if it is the fuel pump at the rear.  It feels like it is getting intermittent gas.  But it only seems to happen on long inclines.  This last time it happened it quit just before I got home so I was able to coast into the driveway.  Maybe there is not enough pressure to keep the gas pumping to the engine.  Any ideas where I should start looking would be helpful.  If I need specific instruments to take readings, I don't have any but it would be nice to know what is required so I know where I should be directing my efforts.  Thanks all for any assistance.

Hello,

Sounds like a plugged intake in the "flower pot" review the "fuel tank tour"  If so you may begin to experience the same symptoms on level ground when the fuel level drops to less than 1/2 full.

Thanks, that is where I will start.  Keep you posted if it works by driving up the same hill.
Cheers
