Stainless Steel Exhaust sleeve/covers

The rear end of my '66 230sl exhaust was clanking so ordered the exhaust kit from SLS along with a lot of other suspension parts. Ride much improved. The SS (chrome? ) sleeves that fit over the pipes are different. The originals (aka the ones that were there when I bought it) are a simple cylinder shape,  while the new ones end in a ring shape. I kinda got used to the originals, but what is correct?

I have also heard of exhaust sleeves that have a diverter panel inside the sleeve that directs the exhaust down instead of straight out. I think the theory is that less exhaust gas will get on the right tail light. This of course is the reason why some right tail lights are darker than the left.

As any body ever used this style of sleeve? It is supposed to look exactly like the original at a distance.

I found one of these diverter tips on a 220D I purchased.  I always thought it was there to keep the soot from the exhaust out of the following cars.  It does seem to work.  But hopefully I can clear up my oil burning problem on my 230SL and not have to use these.  Ron

Well, I need to fix this on my car, but I have been wondering about that crazy exhaust. Now it is explained. I have only one diverter and one regular. The diverter is on the right. See pix. I wondered why they stick out 4 or 5 inches too far. Now I know. Probably the muffler assy was off of a different model. It's not pretty, but it is not on my short list of projects.
