Heater Motor Knob

Should it have a light in it or not? Can't seem to a) find anything definitive on here on this and b) see anything on a repair (should there be a need for one)
Thanks

230 sl and 250sl made up to the /8 change over had a light in the blower switch. After changing to the larger diameter knob there was no longer a light bulb. The 280 switch still has a hole in the housing where the bulb was previously mounted, but none of the internal wiring.
photo left - non lighted 280sl switch, the knob is from a radio to show size and style. I think the 280 fan knob had a blue arrow
photo right - lighted fan switch from 230sl with clear plastic tip that extended through a hole in center of knob. This switch was also used in fin tail sedans and coupes.

Al, also, the ones that do have the light bulb, it only comes on when the switch is in the on position, not necessarily when the light switch is turned on? Correct?

Yes. The light in the heat fan switch is NOT connected to the dash illumination circuit. As you said it only comes on as an indicator that the fan is switched on.

Does anyone know why the earlier knob is not completely round?

I think the flat spot was suppose to be in a certain position when off. Left or down... I don't remember off hand.

My light is always on...but, that's because my fan is always on (low speed). I keep it running so that it, well, keeps running!
