123 ignition timing data
« on: May 18, 2010, 11:19:55 »
Hi Guys,

I own one 280 SL 1970 with 051 distributor.
I recently change my distributor for one brand new 123 ignition distributor.
Before to install this new equipment I red the timing data with the old one and I found the following results (on cylinder one plug cable) :
20° at idle.
40° at 1500 rpm.
50° at 3000 rpm.
That is meaning +20° comparing to the Mercedes manual figures.
Then I followed the instalation procedure of 123 Ignition (including the re-index of the distributor gear which is in the engine hole to be at the same index than the conventionnal distributor) and I made once again the timing mesure. I installed one longer spring at the base of the 123 distributor.
I found the same results and the car is running perfectly.
Question :
1) Do you think that my reading with my stroboscope lamp is not good? In fact I precise that I red from the left hand side of the car (battery side) : i.e. : My mesure is not at the vertical line just up the car but with one angle. Nota : I have one single scale on the crankshaft pulley so no confusion is possible.
2) Do you think that the distribution internal pulley is not well indexed with the fuel injection pump? And if it is the case how can I tune it to loose 20° in my distributor timing results?
Thank you in advance for your advises.
Best regards
