Air Filter Canister
« on: June 08, 2010, 16:49:25 »
When I purchased my 280 SL it did not have the original canister that holds the air filter, it had some kind of K&N after market thing on it from the PO......Wanting to be correct I found a used canister from a well known vendor who told me it was for a 280 SL but when it arrived the top does not seem correct for the bottom.

I have no idea exactly what the right part looks like since my car never had it when I purchased it so if these photos help,  can someone tell me what I need and if this is the right part?

I think what I was sent are mismatched top and bottom or this is from another model Mercedes of the era.

In the photos:

Latch #1  lines up ok , but what is the  "A" connector for?
Latch # 2 is ok
Latch #3 is the problem, it does not line up or connect to anything no matter how I orient the top and what is the thing labeled "B" for?

At this point I'm sure I was sold something for another car, unless I'm totally not understanding what connects to what.

Any help is appreciated.

This is the mounting point, here a rubber damper that has M8 threaded pins
each end attaches

Mark,

I believe you are right in thinking that the top and bottom of that cannister do not match.

The top is supposed to have a tab which engages into that 'open mouth' gap and then two spring latches.
I believe the 230 SLs have such a top with 3 spring latches.

Thanks Naj  I must have a bottom part that is from a 280 and the top must be for a 230.

A seller is offering me a canister from a 1970 280SE  , is this the same (correct) part as a 70 280 SL ?

Hi, Mark,

Ask for a picture but I think the 280 SE filter canister is much taller and also has an inlet pipe which would not fit in the available space.
Picture added.

You could probably adapt the cover you have to make ir useable.

See (not very good) picture
