A/C vent disassembly

I am disassembling my a/c for cleaning and would like to repaint the vents with chrome spray.  However, I am having difficulty removing the center direction "guide" and I after much pulling, I thought I would ask for advice before I break it.  Attached is a photo of the black piece that I can't get out.  Can anyone advise if comes out or not?
