416 hardtop mounted
422 Power Steering
600 Garnish moldings on hardtop
737 ?

One more thing: Looks like you have one of the very last 230 SLs made. There were only 15 made in 1968!

Now let's see the car!

it should be a 66....if your looking at the stamped date I think it just blurred some, im attaching a pic of the car for ya....one thing I was expecting is to see where the car was delivered to, I was really curious since this is a euro. is there a code for location?

Hey Mercury.

From what I can tell, your car is indeed a Euro and was delivered to Seibert/Saarbrucken in Deutschland in 1965. The chassis number also appears to confirm it actually being a 1965 (being built in August of that year) ...

The production date/month is the start of production.  The year of manufacture is the  date of completion, in your case , Feb/'66.

Interesting. So the dated stamp meant it was officially "inspected & ready to go?"

And in Mercury's case, the car was ordered in'65 before it was actually completed? Not surprising as I bet they were the talk of the town back then. Come to think about it... they still are!  :)

The car was produced (finished) in August 1965. The rubber stamp is applied by the dealer upon first registration. Between September and February the car was either at the dealer's showroom or used as a demonstrator. In Germany, the year of a car is determined by the date of first registration (EZ =Erstzulassung, i.e. 2/66).
737 is a brown softtop.

 K,
Not according to Mr Dillenburger, MB Classic, Stuttgart.
Here is an info/data reply I recieved from him after summiting the orig Data card a few year back:

 One of my Euro 113s [ 1967 250SL, - 0231, has full documentation
and according to them, QUOTE-"The car in question was Completed on April 13th, 1967 and afterwards delivered to our Mannheim Branch, Germany."
That puts the production start as Jan, 1967 and completion date as posted on the Data card as April 13 , 1967.
You may have other sources of info ?
Tnx

It makes me feel really good that yall have taken the time to decipher this for me, it looks like my engine may not be original although I have not been able to read all the numbers yet...I am probably going to work my digicam down in there and try to take a picture and read it that way, I guess the big question then will be whether it was replace in germany with a euro engine or the U.S....so far the numbers stamped into the head are 3-3.3 127-019-01 and on the block I have several different numbers 361746 numbers in question till I get a better look(on the plate)...7010746 and 127010100 ...none of these seem to match any numbers I see on my data card so far. anyway...thanks again guys...this forum seems to be the best of the 3 I have found. This may only add to the confusion but my stamp reads 12 November 63 and the production data table for my chassis says November. So I would submit that the car was completed in November and promptly delivered and sold (and registered...) Only that lucky Dutchman knows for sure...

Oh and Mercury, I haven't forgot about you. It might be fun for you to try and find the body numbers on your car to see if they line up with the datacard. For example, check your #18 Aufbau number and then find the one stamped on hood (drivers side at top when open) and on the hard-top ... It should also match the one in engine bay driver's side near relays. Your #5 box: the chassis number, should be on a metal plate on the firewall and also on the frame under your air cleaner hose.

Have fun!

the digicam worked on the engine plate, except the number in front of the 2 is a 1...ie 127 photo attached....Im pretty sure the front of my car has been wrecked at some point....there are no numbers on the hood ....and my panels dont line up perfect like I think they should...when I get it painted I am going to have the front end gone over again to see if I can make everything the way it should be. BTW anyway to tell by these numbers if its a euro or not?

Mercury7,

I don't know if you can tell a Euro engine by it's number.  I've never heard of any such database.

I'm not sure about that engine plate, it looks more like a body plate.  I am not near my W113 now to verify, but I would think it would read "127.981-10-XXXXXX".  Can anyone confirm what's on their 230SL engine plate?

Hi Rodd. My engine plate does look different than that one. First of all, mine is a small plate maybe 1X2.
It reads: Daimler-Benz AG
             Stuttgart
                TYP
             M 127 II
       127.981 -12- 000045

This was easy for me because the tag is now in my desk drawer rather than on the car!

This is a "Tauschaggregat" (exchange engine or long block), not the original engine.

Thanks Klaus, So this is standard for mercedes to lable the engines they replace as replacements :) wow that seems odd...so really there is no way to tell with out disassembly whether I have the euro version or the american version...I know its just a little more horse power but it would be nice to know....also wheather or not it has 7 bearings or 5....I assume 7 is better since they switched to that at some point lol .

The engine looks like a 230 replacement (because of the 127 number) so it will have the 5 main bearings. The only difference between the US and Euro engine will be the camshaft, and that you can determine by reading the number that is stamped on the end of it (the side facing the windshield, you may need a small mirror to read it). In the technical articles database (http://www.sl113.org/articles/default.asp) I think the different numbers can be found that will tell you which camshaft you have. But I would guess that if the engine was purchased and installed in the US, it will be US-spec.

Is there any difference between Euro and US engines in the 230sl?  Camshaft or whatever.
