Radio gremlins

My radio works intermitantly; it powers up and green dial light goes on and at full blast is audible with top down.  It appears to be missing the amplifier box, as there is an empty space behind glove box were I blieve the amp clamped in.

However other times; it wont go on. Seems to go on either with key in ignition (engine off) then not work with engine runing; or off with key in ignition then on with engine on? But not both.  Had fuel pump recently replaced; if that means anything.

Car sat for a few years; however, radio ran all day on last drive; wondering if some corrosion or contact point needed to be powered/heated up to establish positive contact.

Is there a ground strap or short in the back plugs/wires?

Will adding an amp make it louder or produce better quality sound.

My Becker is self contained, so there is no separate amplifier box.

My suggestion would be to remove the radio from the car, and set it up "off line" in your garage or something, don't forget an antenna.  If the radio works reliably, check the wiring.  You could put a test lamp in place of the radio and see if it remains on during a drive or whether or not it flickers.

Becker repairs all their radios and were the only factory installed radios in the 113's.  Blaupunkts were US dealer installed and are hard to repair.
