Hybrid pagoda

I have a serious itch to create a pagoda with modern running gear, i wouldn't dismember a car that is original, but i see one or two thats ripe for converting to maybe even a diesel with a nice auto box, nothing too modern with ecu's etc, just simple and reliable and most important economical, Has anybody seen one ?

Thanks peter and rob, I wasnt thinking of going that far, Anybody thats had a newish mercedes will tel you the recent cars are not as reliable as the old ones, warning lights for engine management-abs-asr etc, no thanks, I want simple reliable economical motoring, Ive seen that video before, its very nice, but too complicated for me, Il keep a look out for a donar car, and maybe one day il jump in. I love my new car its just too good to leave in tenerife (plan a) so ime thinking about a nice silver one to keep here in the uk, RHD manual even, there, is one for sale 5 speed restored been for sale a long time tho, interior dosnt look too clever, I dont realy want to part with mine but cant keep 2 ime afraid. Still thinking what to do.  :-\

Sure Reggie,

That's possible.
Quite a few people did try conversions towards a more modern or more powerful power plant in the W113 chassis...
Personally I think a poor car waiting to be reanimated should hold for such a conversion and not a good survivor.

OK, what has been done in the past:

a) Conversion into a 220 Diesel ;)  Walter Klatt did that. Just search the home page here for his diesel conversion of a 230 SL which is now a 220 SLD.

b) Mercedes M116 or M117 V8 transplants. ;)  See Hatch & Son's hompage for two very nice and authentic conversions.

c) Christian Kromm (not on our site) has a small shop near Worms in Germany and did a perferct conversion to a 280 SL 6.3 with the M100 Grand Mercedes engine.  ;) ;D :D This car has even air suspension and is supposed to handle very nicely - in contrast to the unique 1967 factory prototype that was later destroyed ... :'( :'(

d) Several (most extremely) ugly conversions with some US-V8s.
Mostly these cars' authenticity has been irreversibely destroyed.

None off the above for sure, I will keep an eye out for something not too drastic, also it will be mercedes, the donor car i will run to see if it suits me before i get involved, I will only do a car thats engine less or beyond repair drive train wise, 70 mph at 3000 plus rpm is not good, niether is £6 a gallon of petrol, I want to use it daily-not just special occations, see what turns up

I think the boys are missing the point of what you are trying to achieve.

My guess is you are looking for a car with good looks [ Pagoda] but is simple and easily to service, reliable and with low fuel consumption?

You might have to recon the motor but what about a 5 cylinder 300D and if you wanted some extra power maybe a turbo version, a lot of those motors where sold in the US in large cars ie the W126.

If you coupled that motor with a 5 speed manual gearbox from say a Toyota Supra and could find a low ratio diff from a US 108 4.5 you would have an almost unbreakable combination, good fuel economy and enough grunt to see off any standard 280 113, as well as a lot of Porsches etc at the traffic lights.

Why don't you do it

Thats what i had i mind, I was going to buy a merc diesel and run it to see if i could live with it - maybe try a few before i took the plunge, I wont go looking-i'll wait for it to come to me. Ime on the case already.

The more I think about it the more sence a turbo charged 300D conersion of a W113 makes.
Just such an engine installed in one of the C111 experimental coupes and achived an average speed of 195.4 MPH and 14.6 MPG for a period of 12 hours.
That motor was putting out 230 HP at 4,400 to 4,600 RPM, that's probably enough grunt to see off an E type whilst at crusing speed should give better tha 30 MPG.

Yes it sounds like a good plan to me. I wouldnt strip a pagpda to do it, but seems plenty knocking about with no engine. I have taken some measurments of mine already, just need a donar to see what will fit, not sure about a turbo fitting-but if it does thats whats going in, Also prefer an auto, then ime not faffing with pedal boxes. Keep it simple i say  ;D

Reggie,

Advantages of the Supra fire speed manual is that there are various ratios for fifth gear with overdrive ie less than 1 to 1.

For cruising at 100 to 120 KPH with a 300D motor ideally you would need to get engine RPM down to around 2000 RPM.

The 108 4.5 diff will help as it's the lowest ratio available that will fit the same diff housing

Look hard at the W124 300E Class driveline. 6 cylinder inline with Bosch CIS injection. I don't know if it will fit but I always liked that engine.

Thank you. I think driving the donar car is a great idea. Ime on the hunt for a culprit. Going the Diesel route though.  :D

Thanks TreeDoc, I have been sat in the sun for 3 weeks, now back in the UK, Freezing cold in Yorkshire, The listing had ended, But at the moment i couldnt think of any thing worse than faffing about with cars, I saw a 113 in tenerife but couldnt drag the mrs out of the shop to get a closer look, Great climate for that car, I missed mine,
