Lost ignition Key
« on: October 04, 2010, 16:55:46 »
Hi,

Im new here and I have a problem.  I lost the ignition key while my car was in storage.  The steering is locked and I have searched for a new ignition cylinder.  I am unable to find one for a 71280sl.  The only ones I have forund are for a 280SE...Will those work?

is there anyone who can make me a new key with my VIN #?

any help

Thankls

You can go to your local dealer with proof of ownership and serial# and they will order a new key for you.
The only caveat is that your vehicle has not had an ignition lock change.

Thanks, Ill try that but looking at the metal dash panel, it looks like someone may have changed it before.

You may be able to have a locksmith make a new key to fit the door handle, the handle is easily removed by taking one screw out behind the weatherstrip. The doors on a 71 280sl if original are keyed the same as the ignition. I'd reccomend taking out the right side handle as it will have less wear than the drivers side.
