removal of water pump housing assembly
« on: October 30, 2010, 03:06:09 »
i am replacing a leaky water pump, and cleaning up a bit of the engine parts on my 230 sl 1964 model year, i want to remove the housing that bolts to the block, question is how do i remove the housing, i have undone 2 bolts that hold it on, but there seems to be a bolt (it has no hex head)  that is snug upto the harmonic balancer, does the balancer have to come off? is there any exploded diagram of the 230 engine online anywhere?

thanx

Hello Neil,

No, the harmonic balancer does not have to come off to remove the water pump housing.
There is usually a hole/recess in the balancer that aids in removal of that one bolt.

You will have to turn the engine over on the large bolt in the crank pulley by using a 27 mm socket and short extension (spark plugs removed will make it much easier) until the recess/hole lines up with the bolt in question.

Hello Neil,

And that third bolt is a 6mm allen head.
