Flower pot/ fuel retur pipe problem?
« on: November 04, 2010, 01:42:23 »
Every so often, this 1969 model 280 sputters, and even dies when driving in slow traffic, hitting red lights. Problems occur occasionally, never at high speeds, but most typically in warm weather, with the fuel tank almost full. Seems to appear it's less likely when half empty or below. When having cooled off for 20 - 30 minutes, it's back to normal.

Of course the CSV or WRD may be the culprit, or even the thermostat in the MFI, but at the same time the fuel return pipe by the flower pot sticks out as a source of trouble, perhaps being partly clogged up, since fuel level seems to affect operation. Does this sound logical or am I barking up the wrong tree?

Hi, Anders,

I had a similar problem with my first 230 SL. It had been stored in a barn for 12 years.
The fuel return pipe had corroded from the inside and all the rust particles lodged in the flower pot entrance.
Took about 3 monthe to find but in the end the tank had to be cut open and the return line to the pot replaced.
In your case, it may not be as severe and you may be able to clean out the line with a shirt wire hanger or similar cable.

So,definately worth checking for obstructions.

Also, see this thread:

and fuel tank in the wiki

Note: return line can be metal or rubber inside the tank.
