1970 280 Sl - Belgian Rally Car info needed.

My first post ... if I am in the wrong forum please let me know.

Marcel Rok a dealer in Belgium  has a 280 SL Rally car with recent participation in Historic Rallies in Europe.  It is priced at 45,000 Euros , about $ 60,000 US ... does anybody know this car ? ... also any thoughts as to valuation ... my interest is in similar events.  The web site is  www.mroks.com   ... you will need to scroll down several cars.

The 5-speed (although a Getrag - original was ZF) is a desirable option and worth something in its own right, but considering the other non-original alterations, I would say the price is a bit steep. But if you wish to go rallying, this is the car...
I personally regard the Pagoda as a stylish, comfortable GT, if I wanted to rally or race something, I would choose another car.

You'd need to do an inspection and a test drive. Especially verify if the suspension is ok and the handling is good, and check the body work for rust.

If it is as good as they say it is, EUR 45K might be a reasonable price. Prepping a Pagoda for rallying would typically cost you up to EUR 10K as well... (roll cage, halda, rally seats, two sets of tires, etc etc).

I did like the Lancia Zagato's.

Thank you ... the dealers web site www.mroks.com seems to be operational sometimes, and not other times.
I understand the car is owned by a Belgian chap, and it won the 2006 Winter Challenge.
I am not interested in being the fastest in stage or regularity rallies, just the most comfortable ... and with something that is durable, which Pagodas seem to be.
I believe that this year there were at least two German owned Pagodas in the La Carrera Panamericana, and that is one of the events that I would like to do in the future.
In addition to rallies, I want to be able to use the same car with the wife in the touring events that she prefers over the rallies.

Last year a friend of mine did the Carrera in a 230 SL as well... and finished pretty well. He did say that since it's a 6 cylinder you'll be in the same class as Porsche 911's, and he felt the Pagoda 300 kgs too heavy or 100 hp short. His Pagoda did not have any problems, and the 911's did, so he finished pretty high (he is a very good driver though) but he'd take a well prepped 911 next time.

If you do multi-day events, the Pagoda is fine: it's reliable, comfortable, and good in snow because it's fairly heavy (grip) and rear wheel drive. On the connecting stages you'll be comfortable, and in winter rallies it does well. I did the Winter Trial in 2004 with my Pagoda and found it very good.

For shorter, one-two day rallies with many mountain stages a lighter Italian car (Lancia Fulvia, Alfa) will be better because it's lighter and quicker.

So it sounds like it is good for you...
