interior chrome on early 111 coupe
« on: April 28, 2011, 19:53:32 »
I have a '68 111 280SE which uses satin chrome on many interior items. Eventually, I want change over to bright chrome as used on the early 111 cars. My question is what are all of the bright chrome items? I know about the rear view mirror being chrome instead of the black plastic. I also know the horn ring and wiper arms are bright chrome. I know about the seat hinges being different but I don't want to change those.

What about the trim strips on the windshield piller between the weatherstriping and the wood trim? Is that satin or bright chrome on the early cars? Are there any other differences?

Thank you!

That part would be bright chrome on all early w111 cars. The parts that where satin chrome finished was a US model only thing,
apparently introduced due to some regulation that supposedly was to prevent the driver from being "disturbed" by glare from the
chrome parts visible from the driver seat.

Fortunately all the Euro/Non US cars (w113 and w111) had the bright chrome trim during the entire production period.

That's amazing they did all of that for US cars. Too bad. I would have liked the bright chrome!

I am going to send off my newly acquired early mirror to get chromed. I am going to take pictures of the innards so I won't forget how it goes together. I'll post them when I get them. Surprisingly complex for just a mirror! But then again, most the part assemblies on these cars are complex.

If someone would like to post these pictures to the technical manual, I would be happy. That sort of thing is not my strong suit!

Here are the pictures. The date on the silver mirror clip is Aug. 3rd 1964. The red "X" is probably an inspection mark showing the arm screw is tight. Enjoy!
