I am in the process of recovering the glove box,in the top right hand front corner there is a cutout approx: 1 1/2 inch: wide and 1inch deep ,does anyone know what it is for? if it is of no use i will cover it over with material

Eric, I happen to have mine out and looked - I don't see any purpose either, but my original tex is cut out around that "notch" leaving the painted surface underneath exposed.

It is the cut out for the lock lever.

I used
thin
"Irish felt" that is used by boat and ship builders and also by roofing companies but he was not satisfied with it because it does not have a paper or cardboard feel.
You should be able to get a sample where you are and decide whether you like it.
