Lower rear fender chip guard
« on: February 19, 2011, 05:36:03 »
I have a 280SL which was repainted in 1983.  It was shown in the Detroit Gemutlichkeit Concours 3 years. It received 2nd place 2 years and 1st in 85.  It was invited to the 100th Mercedes Concours in 1985 winning third place.  I am having the car repainted and the question came up whether it was correct to have chip resistant material applied to the lower rear fenders on a line under the chrome strip starting behind the rear wheel opening and terminating at the seam under the rear fender.  To my knowledge, I never remember of being (gigged) for a paint defect for having the chip guard applied under the body paint.  A local person told me not to duplicate this detail.  The painting will be started next week.  Any thoughts?

Your local person is correct, no chip-guard under the body paint.

There should be no chip resistant paint on the lower panel behind the rear tires. Only the rocker panels have a textured surface.
