help guys my car won't start
« on: May 05, 2011, 23:31:54 »
Hi all
here is what I did;
filled up my gas to full. drove for about 10 min than stopped for 10 min than the car was real hard to start.onec started it run fine till home.once home I gave it a quick lookafter<oil the distributor> adjust the linkage<only a little at the venturi it was sticking a little.
now the car will not start.
1-got spark
2-got fuel coming into the injection pump<it disconected the line going to the injection pump.
3- there is very little fuel comming from the return of the injection pump.I can actually hold my finger there and there is not much pressure...is this normal
Thanks for all your help

If I'm correct there should be 1L per 15 seconds coming from return line. It appears as if you have low pressure and possibly low volume.

why would there be fuel coming in but not out of the injection pump?

I don't want to give more advice than my amateur knowledge allows me but it is my understanding that the volume/pressure test is done at the point where the fuel exits the injection pump to the return line.  Also, you might want to check to see if your cold start valve is leaking.

since the fuel is not gushing out of the return of the injection pump I remove the check valve thet the return hose conects to than turned on the key and fuel now gushes out . I do not have gages for fuel presure testing ,can I asume the fuel pump is no good or the check valve?
Thanks

Hello Erick,

Don't start replacing expensive parts until you find the cause of your problem. Take a hot wire and activate the starting solenoid for a few seconds while someone cranks the engine.  If it starts, you most likely have a fuel delivery problem.  Something clogged or a bad elec. fuel pump.  Make sure you hear the elec. fuel pump running when the ignition is on.

You can go to the hardware store and just buy a reg pressure gauge (for water) it will work fine. Try to find a gauge which does not go too high so you can read the small pressures easily. Next go to the auto parts store and buy 36" of low pressure 5/16 " fuel line. and two small hose clamps. Check to see if you need to add a fitting on the pressure gauge so you will be able to clamp the fuel hose to it. I like to clamp the other end to the end of the metal fuel line going to the intake solenoid.

Thanks guys
before I can't purchase the pressure gage before the weekend,I did a quick test . with the key on I am able to hold the pressure from the supy line right after the fuel filter with my thumb with no to much pressure.should 10psi be hard to hold?
thanks

Erick,

You may want to remove a spark plug or two and see what they look like.

Sounds like a bad fuel pump to me. You have no pressure so your car won't start well after it's hot. Very unlikely to be a plugged fuel filter - not sure why people suggest that considering the size of the filter. It will hold a lot of dirt.
