Picture or description of rear fuel line support needed
« on: April 18, 2011, 01:46:44 »
This weekend's 280SL small project was fuel lines at the rear of the car.  It looks like the return and supply line from the pump are secured to the bracket welded to the crossmember between the brake modulator and the fuel pump.  But nothing is jumping out of the parts pile.

Picture attached.  Can anyone help with a picture or description?  My 230SL has a plastic tie, which doesn't seem correct.

Thanks,

To see the rest of this unrestored original 280Sl go to http://motoringinvestments.com  and enter the site, click on the Mercedes for sale and look at the white survivor 280 offered for sale at $175,000USD. Click on any small pictures to see the larger images.

Thanks, but not really.  I've circled the bracket where it looks like the lines should attach, but neither line appears to be connected. Doesn't seem right.

And, I made a little mark in yellow where the supply line has been incorrectly replaced by re-using the pump fitting and clamping the line to it.  You would think for $175K you would get the correct $31 part.

I shall also be interested to see what others have to type about this one. I just went out and looked at my car, and there is no clip.

Hi--

The only clip on my car is a U-clamp that holds the fuel supply line at the mounting bolt for the fuel pump "cage". This is at the end of the metal line where it is joined by the flexible hose coming from the fuel pump.

Chuck, don't know if this is what you are looking for.  I don't know if it correct since I haven't seen too many others.  It sounds like my clamp is similar to what Joe describes.  You will notice my return line splits and goes back to the tank as well as the pump.  Hope it helps.

OK, thanks guys.

Joe's explanation and Jordan's picture identified an additional clamp that goes on bottom part of the crossmember.

Gernold supplied a picture of what goes on the bracket on the front of the crossmember.  It is a small bracket with a rubber pad that supports the front edge of the fuel tank.  The bracket looks to be PN 113 476 00 36.

I have got to say that Gernold has been a huge help to me on this project, sharing pictures, giving advice and talking me through various procedures, providing parts at reasonable prices and helping me find suppliers for stuff he doesn't have.

Marcus and Chuck--

I'm just putting my car back together. Both Marcus' comment and Marcus and Chuck's photos indicate that the return line splits and goes both to the fuel tank and the pump.

Where does this line attach to the pump?

Is it at the small boss with the screw fitting?

What does this connection do?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Well, the BBB says that it provides increased fuel circulation to reduce vapor lock.  Further, if the bypass is installed then "the bypass valve in the fuel return fitting [of the injection pump] has no vapor hole in the valve disk."  This is on page 07-11/2.

The EPC says that the "T" is used on cars from 10242

My car is 13027, so it should have the bypass hose but it didn't because the electric pump that came with the car had the plug in the fitting.  I went out and looked in the return fitting of the injection pump and I couldn't see anything like a disk.

So I guess I don't really understand and will investigage further.

I had to go take apart my spare pump to refresh my memory on the check valve disc. If you remove the rear most fuel line fitting from the injection pump(remove the line then unscrew the fitting from the pump) and look at the inside you should either see a solid disc or one with a tiny hole in it. If there is no disc you will have no residual fuel pressure and hard starting when hot issues.
