Changing valve seals.
« on: April 28, 2011, 17:32:56 »
Hey everyone, I'm planning on changing my valve seals (not the guides) soon and I was wondering if there was anything I need to watch out for or any tips. Figured they needed to be changed since the car sat 15 years and after I found out my #3 spark plug was being oil fouled. Thanks again in advance.

I really can't mention anything more than what you probably know, but..... (1) makes sure you have the correct seals; (2) cover up the deck so you don't loose anything down inside the engine; (3) notice any seals that have come off the top of the guides (might explain your oil consumption); (4) watch for the guides being loose in the head; (5) review this site for proper assembly instructions of the seal; I didn't find them to be easily installed.

Best wishes.... and I hope your oil consumption problem is resolved with the new seals.

Having done valve seals twice in situ then later on the bench I would really recommend taking the head off the car.  That way you can take a good hard look at everything particularly the valve guides. It's not uncommon that the guides will slip up and down in the heads causing exactly the type of conditions you describe.
